Pioneering Accounting Software Since the 1980s

Samco Software Inc. identified a gap in the Vancouver market during the rise of IBM desktop computers in the 1980s. Many businesses that previously relied on manual bookkeeping wanted to transition to digital solutions. Seeing this demand, Samco introduced a system where firms could purchase computers with pre-installed accounting software and receive hands-on training. Over time, Samco enhanced its software to cater to a growing user base, eventually integrating cloud hosting to provide powerful and scalable business applications without the costs of maintaining an in-house server.

Embracing Innovation with a Hybrid UI

Staying ahead of technological trends, Samco continuously upgrades its software. A significant transformation came with the introduction of a hybrid user interface (UI), combining traditional data entry methods with modern features like cut-and-paste functionality, dropdown menus, and improved navigation. To maintain a competitive edge, the company is currently undergoing a major software rewrite. “It will be web-enabled while retaining the stability and functionality of our legacy system. We’re working on the basic packages, and once released, we’ll begin incorporating hundreds of custom features tailored to our clients' needs,” says Barry Clarke, CEO of Samco.

A Unique Approach to Customization and Support

Unlike many software firms that rely on third-party resellers for customization, Samco takes a direct approach. Many companies establish networks of resellers worldwide, allowing them to modify software for clients. However, if a reseller goes out of business, customers often find themselves stranded without support. Barry Clarke explains, “Samco chose a different path—we handle all custom work in-house, in collaboration with both clients and resellers. This ensures that if a reseller closes, clients can still receive seamless support from any other Samco reseller or directly from us.”

Optimizing Business Operations with a Warehouse Management System

As part of its commitment to efficiency, Samco has developed an optional Warehouse Management System that can be operated on desktops, Android tablets, and handheld scanner devices. The company promotes paperless workflows by automating key processes. “When an order is placed, an email confirmation is sent automatically. If an item is backordered, the system generates a recommended purchase order for review. Customers are notified of any changes, and once the product arrives, backorders are filled, and shippers are alerted to proceed with fulfillment,” explains Barry.

Comprehensive Solutions for Small and Medium Businesses

Samco serves a diverse range of industries, offering solutions for financial accounting, budget tracking, inventory management, payroll processing, retail point-of-sale, and wholesale distribution. The company also supports specialized industries, such as commercial fishing businesses that must comply with Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) regulations. For companies that rent equipment or bundle multiple inventory items into kits, Samco provides functionality to manage, assemble, and disassemble products as needed.

One notable client in British Columbia operates several stores, warehouses, and yards, supplying orchard and farm equipment. They partnered with Samco to develop an eSamco website, allowing customers to log in, access their monthly statements, and reprint invoices—complete with electronic signatures. “This is particularly useful when multiple employees are picking up goods from suppliers. We're also working on integrating their handheld systems and planning a Warehouse Management System implementation next year,” adds Barry.

Expanding Cloud Capabilities for Remote Work

The COVID-19 pandemic forced many businesses to rethink their work environments, balancing between remote and in-office operations. In response, Samco expanded its private cloud to enhance capabilities while reducing costs. The upgraded system offers more storage, increased memory, and faster data upload speeds. “Clients on our automatic backup system can usually be onboarded onto our hosted platform within an hour, restoring data from the previous night’s backup,” Barry notes.

Future Outlook: Client-Centric Growth and Development

Looking ahead, Samco is focused on enhancing its versatility while keeping services cost-effective. The company aims to strengthen both its internal team and customer relationships, ensuring continued success. “Our clients and employees are our most valuable assets. We listen to their needs, discuss challenges as a team, and develop the best solutions to maximize the benefits of our software,” concludes Barry.

With a steadfast commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction, Samco Software Inc. continues to empower businesses with cutting-edge solutions tailored to their evolving needs.
